shallow draft propulsion for catamran ferry

dear all,

we are about to design a shallow draft (o.6m) ferry of 22m loa.
top speed to be obtained 20 knots, service speed 16 knots
we are looking into different options, have seen the verktorprop fromn AIR
and the sarodrive http://www.saro-bootsantriebe.de/html/english.html ,
are there any other options other than those. This is a ferry operated daily, so
we need a well proven unit, if possible incl. the steering such as with the saro.

Look at the Arneson Surface Drives.

They have the most success with applications around the world.

The Arneson has vectored thrust and a rudder for stability. Ease of installation and no special transom requirements.

Also look at http://www.levidrives.com/index.html They have some interesting options working for the large vessels, as well as several others such as some interesting posts on this net in the format of "surface drives" in the search engine.

If all you really need is shallow draft , and the ability to tale the ground at times , take a look at the Atkin site. The box keel with reverse deadrise should do fine.

Look at the Rescue Minor , for the hull concept , go from there.


At your size 20K is do able in either a monohull or cat with std cheap off the shelf running gear . Probablty 1/20 the price of the Arnenson et all.

So a keeled hull with a fixed shaft drive system.

Found on a small "lobster boats" rather than what is being built here.

1/20th ratio is a bit out of porpotion. Rudder, propeller, shaft log, design, etc. 5K would not equal 100K. etc, etc..
